Justyn has extensive clinical experience in community agencies, partial hospital programs and psychiatric hospitals. He is currently working in private practice in Cypress, TX at Amy Wine Counseling Center providing counseling services to adolescents and adults. Clinically, he focuses on working with gay men and the LGBTQ community. The LGBTQ areas he specializes in are affirmative counseling, coming out, sexual orientation identity, anxiety, social stigma, relationship issues, depression and Queer people of color.
Justyn earned a Bachelor of Art in Psychology and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Currently, he is completing his Ph.D. in Counselor Education at Sam Houston State University. He is licensed in the state of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Justyn has delivered over 30 presentations at national, state and local conferences speaking on the topic of LGBTQ issues in counseling, multiculturalism and mental health. Furthermore, he has engaged general audiences and participated in local events in the city of Houston about LGBTQ mental health. He has gained a wide range of experience with his professional involvement in a variety of counseling organizations such as American Counseling Association and Texas Counseling Association. On the local level, he currently serves as the Program Director for the Houston Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Additionally, he is a Houston Ambassador for Melanin and Mental Health, an organization focused on connecting individuals with culturally competent clinicians committed to serving the mental health needs of Black & Latin/Hispanic communities. His work as a trainer, clinician, advocate, educator, and researcher are all connected to his desire to address LGBTQ mental health. He has recently founded Justyn Smith Training, an extension of his educational consulting work with the mission to provide LGBTQ continuing education to mental health professionals in the form of trainings, workshops, educational seminars, events and consultation.
